'Science' in the Social Sciences

9. ‘Science’ in the Social Sciences

Exercise 2

Please select which expression reflects personally meaningful (significant) versus what is intersubjectively intelligible. Note that while these distinctions can occasionally be blurred, the point of this exercise is to capture the importance of TWO sorts of ‘meaning’ which Winch and Wittgenstein wish to distinguish for specific analytical purposes.

Drag and drop the phrases below into their appropriate category. When complete, click the ‘How did I do’ button below to see if you correctly identified the phrases.

In this exercise, the user is given a series of statements and asked to sort into either PERSONALLY MEANINGFUL or INTERSUBJECTIVE

The statements are as follow:

  • Emerald is my wife's favorite colored broach.
  • Fenway Park is an historic baseball park in Boston.
  • Tulips bloom in my front yard each spring.
  • Brazil is where I love to watch soccer.
  • England is part of the United Kingdom north-west of France.
  • The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided gorge in Arizona.
  • Summer is the season following spring.
  • Tulips blooming is my favorite sign of spring.
  • Public speaking makes me nervous.
  • Claude Monet was a founder of French impressionist painting.
  • Green Eggs and Ham is my daughter’s favorite book.
  • Hiking in the country is relaxing.

Answers:

The Personally Meaningful statements are:

  • Emerald is my wife's favorite colored broach.
  • Public speaking makes me nervous.
  • Green Eggs and Ham is my daughter’s favorite book.
  • Brazil is where I love to watch soccer.
  • Tulips blooming is my favorite sign of spring.
  • Hiking in the country is relaxing.

The Intersubjective Statements are:

  • England is part of the United Kingdom north-west of France.
  • Fenway Park is an historic baseball park in Boston.
  • The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided gorge in Arizona.
  • Claude Monet was a founder of French impressionist painting.
  • Tulips bloom in my front yard each spring.
  • Summer is the season following spring.

When the user places the phrases into the correct category this is the remediation: “Intersubjectively intelligible” is something that holds the same general meaning ACROSS different people while “personally meaningful” means that the word is defined by what it means specifically in reference to you.
